Hathaway Sets State Record

Olathe Northwest senior Reagan Hathaway entered her last regular season game vs Olathe North with 14 home runs looking to make history. After being walked in the 1st inning, Hathaway stepped up to the plate in the 2nd with the bases loaded and hit a bomb into right field.

This grand slam gave Hathaway the record with 15 home runs, however she wasn't done yet. In the 2nd game of the night, Hathaway hit a monster home run to right field, giving her 16 on the season.

She also hit a hard line drive to the first baseman who couldn't handle it, which allowed her a single. In her final at bat of the night, Hathaway got intentionally walked, that ended her going 3 for 3 on the night.

Hathaway not only holds the record for the most home runs held in a season, but she also is tied for the most home runs held in a game with 3.

The Ravens ended their regular season 18-2 and will host Regionals this Tuesday at CBAC.

Congratulations to Hathaway and the rest of the team on their great season.

David Boschma: The Journey to State

As the school year winds down, the tennis team's is just beginning. Sophomore, David Boschma prepares for the post-season as tennis heads for state. Boschma with partner Andrew Buyle have qualified for the 6A State Tennis Tournament with a record of 21-5.
Tennis started for Boschma just over a year ago when Coach Slaven asked boys to play.

"Coach Slaven asked kids if they wanted to play JV last year and I thought it would be fun so I decided to do it," Boschma said. "I wanted to do something different and try something new and it turned out to be a great experience."
Boschma has only been playing tennis for two years, and this will be his first time playing and qualifying for State. He takes this as a great accomplishment considering he has only been playing tennis for over a year.

This season, the boys tennis team also won the Sunflower League ending Shawnee Mission East's 27 year streak.

"Winning the Sunflower League was totally unexpected," Boschma said. "This has been a great journey and it has been a lot of fun for me recently and so winning that was really exciting."

Boschma and Buyle became partners this year and have built great chemistry only losing 5 games together. Their key to winning is playing their game, having fun, and not taking anything too seriously.

"Andrew's a very funny guy who doesn't take anything too seriously," Boschma said. "We have a lot of fun on the court and we keep things calm and relaxing."

Boschma hopes to place in the top half at State and have a fun rest of the season. He also hopes to end the year on a high note and continue to keep winning.

Come out and support Boschma, Buyle, and the rest of the team as they take on State starting May 15 at CBAC.

A nationally recognized teacher

Sue Rippe is a college biology teacher at Olathe Northwest High School. Rippe has a long list of achievements in academics most notably being inducted into the National Teacher Hall of Fame this past month.

Rippe is at it again recently being nominated by ECEt2 which is a teacher collaboration organization founded by Bill and Melinda Gates. (The Bill Gates)

This is a huge nomination for Rippe  as she continues to further her academic achievements along with continuing to teach.

When asked about the nomination Rippe replied with "It makes me fell exhilarated, I'm anxious, I'm excited, I'm humbled."

That is a long list of emotions that a teacher that has alr
eady achieved so much. So why would she feels this way about this certain organization?

"I've heard it's inspiring, it's transformational, and it will imposer me as a teacher and give me a voice" Rippe said.

Rippe is looking forward to this conference to not only learn from fellow teachers but to also better herself as a teacher.

Rippe also wants to reaffirm her love for teaching by using what she learns at the conference and incorporate it in to her teaching style.

"The best part about teaching is the relationship with my students, truly they are what inspire me each and every day' Rippe said.

The inspiration that Rippe's students provide her everyday is the reason she is as successful as she is and it is the reason that Rippe continues to teach even after a multitude of academic achievements.

Teaching is a difficult job for many people, but Rippe has embraced the challenge and has come to love her job.

"Describing teaching in 3 words, I would have to say rewarding, exhilarating, and challenging" Rippe said.

That statement right there proves that Rippe has accepted the challenge in being an educator and that is what makes her a great teacher. Rippe is the type of teacher that all teacher should strive to be like, a teacher that loves he job, and a teacher continues to improve her teaching styles even after achieving so much.

Northwest track vs Shawnee Mission North

The Olathe Northwest track team attended the Shawnee Mission North relays this past weekend with outstanding performances from both the girls and boys athletes.

The Shawnee Mission North relays consist of basically all of the high schools in the KC metro area which makes the Northwest rankings even more impressive. The massive number of schools who attended helped the team get an idea about their rankings going onto league and state.

The girls team tied for first over all with the ladies from Lawrence High School and the boys placed 4th at the meet.

It was a great day for jumpers with the Ravens dominating the top places within their events. Audrey Fisher placed 2nd in both high jump and triple jump while Deanna Dougherty got 1st in triple jump.  Brendan Watkins also placed 1st in triple jump for the boys.

Sam Thomas brought back a new school record in the 200m, which added major points helping out the boys team over all. Along with breaking the school record, Thomas finished 4th in the 100m.

Taylor Badowski and the lady Raven swim team

Swimming her way to state

The Lady Ravens swim team has ten qualifiers on their way to state at the end of May; one of those ladies being junior, Taylor Badowski.

Badowski has put in many hours of hard work for the team, swimming all three years she has been at Northwest, but her swim career started way before her days at ONW. Badowski started swimming back in first grade with swimming lessons but soon learned she loved the sport. During her middle school years, she became more serious and took to competitive swim.

"My favorite thing about swimming is its taught me so much. I've learned how to be more determined and the friends that I've made in the process are awesome," Badowski said.

The swim team's family like environment helps the team exponentially.
"We're pretty close-knit but we're also not afraid to yell at each other and get on each others backs if they're slacking."

Badowski has had a great relationship with the head coach Hank Krusen.

"He's my coach but he's honestly my friend. I love swimming for him because he knows what he's doing and he also knows what you're going through," Badowski said.

Along with Krusen, the team has welcomed a new assistant coach this year.
Last year at state, Taylor got fourth in her events: 200 IM and the 100 back. She hopes to beat her personal record this year by striving to be in the top three, along with hopes of breaking the 100 backstroke record for ONW.

"I'm really close to beating the school record, I'm less than a half second off. Breaking that would probably be my main goal for this season."

The Olathe Invitational helps the teams figure how they might do at state, with the same teams competing as there will be at the real state meet the weekend after the school year ends. With the help of Badowski, the lady Ravens placed third at the meet which gives them a favorable prospective placing at the state meet.

Badowski and the team compete this Saturday, May 9th in finals.

History of baseball at ONW

Here at ONW we a rich history of success for many different programs academically and with athletics. Our academic achievements include First Robotics, our science and math scholars, and we’ve a history of millions of dollars in scholarships throughout our twelve years of greatness.

But, our athletics however were not always equal to our academic achievements. The athletic department has had the ups and downs that every school goes through while they are fighting for position and prestige. It does take a few years to gather momentum and to compete with the best of the best the sunflower league has to offer. One sport that supports this phenomenon’s is the ONW Baseball team.

The History of  ONW baseball doesn’t just start here, it really begins at the origin of the game itself. Baseball, before it was refined and made a primarily American sport, originated in France as a sport primarily played by clerics in the year 1344. Although it was baseball-like, it was only similar in small ways. The next time a sport like it came up was in England a few hundred years later as a different sport that many believe cricket and baseball came from.

In 1744 the first reference of the word “Base-ball” in the book A Little Pretty Pocket-Book, by John Newbery, the game was setup much like it is today. In the mid-1800’s, at New York City the first professional game of Baseball was played. Ever since then the game has grown and spread, it gained popularity after WW2 and became known as “Americas sport” and what it is today.

Fast forward to 2003 when Olathe Northwest first opened her doors to its students. Now Athletic director Jay Novacek was hired as the first head baseball coach. With coach Setter coming in as his assistant.

The first season went about as well as everyone expected, they went 5-17. The team was full of freshman, sophomores, and juniors with only 2 seniors. But all did have some experience with the game.

"We went into ever game expecting to win,"Novacek said.

This rang true and despite their inexperienced roster they beat the number 1 tea, Mill Valley, in the 2003 season in a series of last minute plays.

The next few seasons are a great example of good coaching, strategy, and the beginning of a legacy that will last as long as the school will.

Mr. Novacek recalls the next few seasons with the view of a proud father watching his program grow, " The next few seasons we improved by 3 wins, and in 2 years we doubled that first year." The team was the Regional Runner-Ups for their first 2 seasons.

The first seven years that ONW competed in baseball the program combined for an overall record of 70-79, Regional Runner-Ups 3 times, and winning the Regional Championship once, qualifying for the state tournament the same year all under Novacek.

Then, after Novacek's final season going 9-11 in 2010, Novacek accepted the Athletic Director position, and consequently giving up the head coaching to trusted friend and long time assistant coach, Coach Setter.

"Coach Setter has been with me since the beginning, he has a great temperament about him, and he can think very clearly during games," Novacek said.

"I felt like I was ready, I've coached baseball for a long time and I also coached basketball." Setter stated recalling the transition to the Head role.

Under Setter the team has gone 50-36, without a losing season, although the went 10-10 in 2014. The team has finished Runner-Up at regionals, and has won one Regional championship.

The program has had 47 state baseball awards and honors players, almost all of which won multiple times. 44 players were given scholarships to play baseball for college.

The team has had one player enter into the MLB. In 2008, third baseman, Nate Tenbrink was selected to the Seattle Mariners in the 6th round of the MLB draft. Nate Played baseball for Kansas State University. He won 5 awards and honors including, KC scholar athlete of the year and 1st team All Sunflower Team.

The team this season is 8-6, bringing the school total record to 126-119.
