David Boschma: The Journey to State

As the school year winds down, the tennis team's is just beginning. Sophomore, David Boschma prepares for the post-season as tennis heads for state. Boschma with partner Andrew Buyle have qualified for the 6A State Tennis Tournament with a record of 21-5.
Tennis started for Boschma just over a year ago when Coach Slaven asked boys to play.

"Coach Slaven asked kids if they wanted to play JV last year and I thought it would be fun so I decided to do it," Boschma said. "I wanted to do something different and try something new and it turned out to be a great experience."
Boschma has only been playing tennis for two years, and this will be his first time playing and qualifying for State. He takes this as a great accomplishment considering he has only been playing tennis for over a year.

This season, the boys tennis team also won the Sunflower League ending Shawnee Mission East's 27 year streak.

"Winning the Sunflower League was totally unexpected," Boschma said. "This has been a great journey and it has been a lot of fun for me recently and so winning that was really exciting."

Boschma and Buyle became partners this year and have built great chemistry only losing 5 games together. Their key to winning is playing their game, having fun, and not taking anything too seriously.

"Andrew's a very funny guy who doesn't take anything too seriously," Boschma said. "We have a lot of fun on the court and we keep things calm and relaxing."

Boschma hopes to place in the top half at State and have a fun rest of the season. He also hopes to end the year on a high note and continue to keep winning.

Come out and support Boschma, Buyle, and the rest of the team as they take on State starting May 15 at CBAC.
